I stare into space. My mother-in-law makes notes on her iPhone about the places we have seen. She then proceeds to expertly re-apply her lipstick using a small handheld mirror.

“Ladies, are you ready?”

A deep radio dj voice cuts through my high tea reverie. I look up and do a double take. I am dazzled by the light. Before me is one strikingly handsome face with a full shock of dark hair attached to a tall, dark and equally handsome body. It is a sportsman’s body, lean yet somehow just bulky enough in the chest and shoulders. The man has eyes that are simultaneously piercing and affectionately genial, as well as a slow, asymmetrical smile capable of sending silver prickles of joy up your spine while simultaneously loosening the points at which your garments are fastened together. He clearly belongs to a rare race, the kind of which urban legends are told. He is one of a very select few, the indisputably, conclusively good-looking breed of Singaporean male. Imperfect perfection due to an infinitesimal chip in his sparkling white front tooth and a scar on his chin. You sometimes spot his kind at a distance at country club events or art exhibits. They are like oases in the desert. Sometimes like a mirage. When you try to get closer, they can sometimes dissolve into nothingness. Here I am face to face with one.

“Oh hello Gerry. You’re here.” Carolyn’s voice comes out husky and even more melodiously modulated. I have to admire her technique. I am also slightly envious that she has put on lipstick and I have not.

This is apparently Gerry de Rojas. He will be showing us three more places. As far as I can tell from his sexy ringless hands, he is unmarried. Gerry is one of a kind. I’d say he's about 30, because there is no more boy about him. The guy is all man. A real estate entrepreneur—or at least that’s what he calls himself. Ordinarily I find this kind of contrived career styling lame. But somehow, from his full lips, the phrase sounds like the very height of cool.

“Hello there,” he says to me, and when I let my eyes meet his, my stomach flip flops.

We troop to his car, a black beamer, the sporty edition, and then he takes us to three exceptional luxury flats, each with four bedrooms and accommodated with premium facilities such that you would find only in the finest clubs, all within minutes of each other in the most desirable corners of Districts 9 and 10.

“I apologise,” Gerry turns to Carolyn disarmingly, “But even if this one is already perfect for you, I feel I wouldn’t be doing my job if I did not show you the other two. It is imperative that you be given a choice here.
